Okay, okay. OKAY. I'm gonna do it. I did it. It's done. I'm settling the argument about what is and is not "post punk" and "post punk revival" in the episode of the show in which I swear the most (you've been warned - SWEARING AHEAD), because I'm sick and tired of lazy music critics being unable to discern between post-punk and garage rock (or even basic punk rock).

By the end of this show, you should be able to recognize key elements of the post-punk scene, and understand where it came from, where it vanished into (hint: goth-rock/new-wave) and what made it come back.

It's a big show, but you only get one scene show a month, so I should make them count...

Lots of countries, lots of fun tunes, lots of strange combinations, but it should all be things you enjoy, or at least enjoy being exposed to. There's Canadian psychobilly, Australian political rock, Midwestern funk, French acid-house, Moroccan dub, Taiwanese rubber soul, and blasts from the past that ought to tickle and delight.

Go find a new person today to get to subscribe to the podcast. Even if you need to grab someone random on the street, or go print out a poster with the site's address and tape it to a telephone pole or a streetlight. More listeners means more shows! As President Obama said, "If a farmboy from Tatooine can save the galaxy, you can too."

Next week, big big show to celebrate one year of me doing this nonsense. Be here or be a [REDACTED].

As always, I recommend not reading the setlist until you've heard the show. You'll only spoil your surprises. Also, go out and make new people listen to the show. We need more fresh blood. And to my new listener in Bulgaria who seems to be listening to most of the shows, welcome! No idea how you found us, but go get some friends to listen!

In the early 1990s, England had a series of reactions to the grunge and shoegaze movements, the biggest of which was a desire to return to the classic rock stylings of the 60s and 70s. This spawned the movement known as BritPop, whose heyday ran from 1991 until 1997 or so.

Over the next three hours, I'll walk you through some of the key moments in BritPop, play you some of the biggest tunes, introduce you to a bunch of "also-rans" and talk about what ended up causing BritPop's decline (Spoiler: mostly BritPop itself).

It's a fun show, a "best of BritPop" if you will, full of lots of bright and bouncy songs, plus a whole lot of England.

Weird week. As I type this in, I'm sitting on a Ticketmaster page, camped, waiting to get tickets to Prophets of Rage, listening to the second Stone Roses single (which will be in next week's show), being sad that the singer/guitarist from Boom Boom Satellites is losing his battle with his brain tumor. I saw Caravan Palace a few days ago, and that was good. There's a song this week about "the best part of Ohio" for my Ohio peeps. There's a bit of Indonesian rock.

This week's show, like most shows, we'll cover all sorts of stuff. It's a few minutes long, but I wanted to spend a little bit of extra time on Boom Boom Satellites, so I did, and you can't stop me.

This week's your usual sized, fun-filled episode, stuffed to the gills with music from Japan, Turkey, Thailand, Finland, Germany and more. We go as far back as swing, and as cutting edge as trip-hop. We play music from The GothFather, from the king of Proto-Punk, and music that's somewhat educational.

It's a fun show. You should enjoy it. I know I did.

It's the end of the month, and in constantly proving that Cliff is bad with space estimates, I had a ton of time left over, so I provide to an XL sized show stuffed full of awesomeness and excitement, with loads of our favorites all crammed into an epic 3-hour episode.

This is also a week I recommend NOT looking at the set list until after the show is done, simply because it's full of a bunch of fun surprises.

You will get stuff from Argentina, Japan, Germany, Russia, Israel, Portugal, a big block of Scottish rock, and even more things that I'm too excited to type in right now. Rock, jazz, hip-hop, stuff from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and teens... Oh, and the new Stone Roses single!

This week, we deep dive into the world of post-rock, full of gorgeous instrumentals and soundscapes that build worlds out of songs without words. This is one of my favorite subgenres of music - I have an entire playlist full of this stuff for when I'm writing that I just set on shuffle, and it drifts me through all sorts of moods and mindscapes. A guy I bumped into at the Motion City Soundtrack show said I should do a scene show on post-rock, so here we are.

If you aren't familiar with post-rock, it's rock without lyrics. I think you'll dig it. I know that I have for almost 20 years now. There isn't a ton about the history or development of the genre, simply because it isn't a centralized movement with a discernible story arc, but there is such a plethora of amazing bands doing this stuff, I didn't repeat anyone in the show, just to give you as many different sounds as possible, and I still had post rock bands I left out.

You can keep digging if you want more, I'm sure, but now you know where to start...

This week, we finally do our tribute to Prince. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, The Artist Mostly Known As Prince was one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. Blending funk, rock and R&B, Prince was a force to be reckoned with. One of the Top 50 Guitarists by Rolling Stone magazine, Prince lived a life that was envied by many. He got a recording contract at age 17. He replaced his name with a symbol, then changed it back again.

He was the purple one.

From his home in Paisley Park (just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota), Prince built an empire, releasing 39 albums, recording dozens (maybe hundreds) more. A tiny guy with a big amount of style. This week, we give you an overview of the life and music of Prince.

As always, the website for the show is www.starlightsociety.com and you can find us on Twitter @Devinoch and if you want to donate to the show, you can do so over at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety - All of these are things that are worth doing.

You should also be spreading the good word about the show, trying to get us new listeners. I'm not above pandering....

Show #42 was always planned to be a special show. We will have a tribute to Prince next week, but this week, we're celebrating the life and works of Douglas Adams, and all the musicians that he touched. I tell stories about how he nearly got Monty Python killed, and how he named Pink Floyd's album "The Division Bell." But mostly I talk about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and how important it's been to me over the years, in all its various incarnations - radio, book, movie and game.

As always, you can find the shows at www.starlightsociety.com and I'm on Twitter @Devinoch and if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety - all of these are things you can do.

Finally and most importantly, please continue telling folks about the show. I do so love seeing fresh faces (and locations) in the crowd, and there are a whole lot of states (and countries) we haven't hit yet, so keep on spreading the good word. Or bad word. Or whatever words you happen to have about the show.

So because we had two scene shows this month, and the grunge show ran overlong, this is a particularly short week, but hey, it's still a show, and it's full of fun stories of people whom have brought (or stoked) particular music in my life over the years.

I tell stories about an epic mixtape from high school, about an alternative to Hooked On Phonics, about how I learned the 19/17 Nebraska rule, about the songs I picked up riding in cars, and a handful more.

It's a show that won't last much more than an hour, but it's chock full of fun.

As always, you can find all our podcasts at www.starlightsociety.com and you can contribute to the show at www.patreon.com/starlightsociety

There is a Prince tribute show coming in the vein of our David Bowie tribute show (the R.I.P. Prince show will be show #43) but it's a bit out, because I have plans for the next episode that have been set for a while (based on the episode number, so it can't really move), and because I want to do my homework on Prince first. I wasn't a huge fan of his beforehand, but in starting to do my research, I think I was just being exposed to the wrong stuff. I thought about trying to to cram Prince into the hour and change I had here, but it felt like I was short shifting him, which isn't fair to an artist of his breadth of work.

It's a power of 4 show, and that means a scene show! This is our biggest show to date, clocking in at a whopping 3 hours worth of music (which means next week will be a pretty short show) but to cover grunge, I needed to go deep and make sure didn't miss any of the heavyweights.

Over the course of this episode, I'll talk about the protogrungers, the early days and the rise of SubPop Records, grunge's breakthrough into the mainstream, the supergroup projects that formed, some of the non-Seattle grungers, the reasons grunge crashed out of the mainstream, whatever the hell "post-grunge" is supposed to be, and a bit about where grunge is today.

So strap on your Doc Martins, pull on your flannel overshirts and get ready to get dirty in the moshpit. Let's talk about grunge.

As always, if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so over at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and if you're new to our show, you can find all the back episodes up at www.starlightsociety.com/

Finally and most importantly, thanks for tuning in, and I hope you'll go find a new convert for the show today. Keep spreading the word.

(Correction: In the show, I state that Kim Deal started The Breeders with her brother Kelly. I meant to say her twin sister Kelley. Brainfry, man. It happens.)

This week's show was a lot of fun, with me not giving a lot of preplanning to the show, remixing the set list right up through recording, putting things in, pulling things out, just finding an odd blend that tickled my fancy, but I think it should amuse and entertain loads of people, and if it's not for you, well, try again next week, I guess, but I love this week's episode.

It is, as the kids say, a banger.

It's got it all - domestic, international, current stuff, things from the Way Back Machine, rock, techno, jazz, hiphop, grunge, pop... we play stuff from loads of different countries (Turkey, UK, Indonesia, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Israel) as well, as always, and hopefully you'll find something new to love, as well as maybe be reminded to go listen to things you haven't fished out of your record collection in quite some time.

As always, if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and you can follow me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/Devinoch and you can always find all our shows at http://www.starlightsociety.com/ and if you want to email me, I tell you the email address to reach me at the end of every show. Good lord, this social media thing results in a ton of hyperlinks. Maybe that's why they're so hyper.

Now, on with the tunes! Heeyah!

(Correction: In the show I mistakenly state that Temple Of The Dog was a tribute to the late singer of Poi Dog Pondering. It was a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late singer of Mother Love Bone. See Show #40 - Grunge to hear more about how many times I've made this mistake over the years.)

I'm feeling better again, after a week's cold/flu that was one of the worst I've ever endured, I think, and I'm back for another scene show. This week, we take a look at progressive rock, better known as Prog.

Prog's roots are mostly English, but there were American (and Canadian) prog rock bands too. Now, prog as a scene is too big for one scene show, so consider this Intro To Prog, and it focuses on '66-'77. At some point later, we'll revisit Prog in another scene show, and delve more into the time periods after that. Not next month, though.

As always, if you want to help the show, you can contribute over at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety/ and if you're new to the show, feel free to check out our entire back catalog of shows. Scene shows are clearly marked, and are powers of 4.

This week's show is full of Mellotrons and Roger Dean paintings, bands singing about mystic things and lofty ideals, time signatures that go off the rails and keep on going...

So I apologize for not talking too much in this particular episode, because I'm pretty sick, having spent all day Wednesday in bed, bundled up under three layers of blankets, in addition to a sweatshirt and sweatpants. I'm starting to feel a bit better, but I still don't feel "good" so I'm taking it easy, and that means the show is taking it easy too, so you get a potpourri show of odds and ends, a bunch of new songs from albums that just came out and the assorted old school favorite or two thrown in for seasoning.

Things'll make more sense next week, I'm sure, but this week, you can just attribute it all to my delirium fever haze and everything else will make sense later. As always, if you want to donate to the show, you can do that at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and if you want to send someone to the show nice and easy, which you should be doing, as we always need fresh ears and new listeners, the page is http://www.starlightsociety.com/

Your patience, patronage and persuasion of pilgrimage is appreciated. Back to bed with me. I'm waxing alliteratively. Never a good sign.

"I'm 37?!"

Mar 18, 2016

It's been mostly rainy here in the Bay Area for the last few weeks (yesterday, when I recorded the show, naturally, it was bright and sunny, but I woke up to heavy clouds this morning) so I thought I'd do an entire show full of rain songs, of which there are a ton.

Rain has been a topic of fascination for musicians for a long time. It's a metaphor, it's imagery, it's a lot of things. Anyhow, enjoy two hours of songs about rain.

If you want to donate the show, as always, it's http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety/
