Touring the world one pair of headphones at a time...

May 13, 2016

This week, we finally do our tribute to Prince. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, The Artist Mostly Known As Prince was one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. Blending funk, rock and R&B, Prince was a force to be reckoned with. One of the Top 50 Guitarists by Rolling Stone magazine, Prince lived a life that was envied by many. He got a recording contract at age 17. He replaced his name with a symbol, then changed it back again.

He was the purple one.

From his home in Paisley Park (just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota), Prince built an empire, releasing 39 albums, recording dozens (maybe hundreds) more. A tiny guy with a big amount of style. This week, we give you an overview of the life and music of Prince.

As always, the website for the show is www.starlightsociety.com and you can find us on Twitter @Devinoch and if you want to donate to the show, you can do so over at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety - All of these are things that are worth doing.

You should also be spreading the good word about the show, trying to get us new listeners. I'm not above pandering....

Show #42 was always planned to be a special show. We will have a tribute to Prince next week, but this week, we're celebrating the life and works of Douglas Adams, and all the musicians that he touched. I tell stories about how he nearly got Monty Python killed, and how he named Pink Floyd's album "The Division Bell." But mostly I talk about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and how important it's been to me over the years, in all its various incarnations - radio, book, movie and game.

As always, you can find the shows at www.starlightsociety.com and I'm on Twitter @Devinoch and if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety - all of these are things you can do.

Finally and most importantly, please continue telling folks about the show. I do so love seeing fresh faces (and locations) in the crowd, and there are a whole lot of states (and countries) we haven't hit yet, so keep on spreading the good word. Or bad word. Or whatever words you happen to have about the show.

So because we had two scene shows this month, and the grunge show ran overlong, this is a particularly short week, but hey, it's still a show, and it's full of fun stories of people whom have brought (or stoked) particular music in my life over the years.

I tell stories about an epic mixtape from high school, about an alternative to Hooked On Phonics, about how I learned the 19/17 Nebraska rule, about the songs I picked up riding in cars, and a handful more.

It's a show that won't last much more than an hour, but it's chock full of fun.

As always, you can find all our podcasts at www.starlightsociety.com and you can contribute to the show at www.patreon.com/starlightsociety

There is a Prince tribute show coming in the vein of our David Bowie tribute show (the R.I.P. Prince show will be show #43) but it's a bit out, because I have plans for the next episode that have been set for a while (based on the episode number, so it can't really move), and because I want to do my homework on Prince first. I wasn't a huge fan of his beforehand, but in starting to do my research, I think I was just being exposed to the wrong stuff. I thought about trying to to cram Prince into the hour and change I had here, but it felt like I was short shifting him, which isn't fair to an artist of his breadth of work.

It's a power of 4 show, and that means a scene show! This is our biggest show to date, clocking in at a whopping 3 hours worth of music (which means next week will be a pretty short show) but to cover grunge, I needed to go deep and make sure didn't miss any of the heavyweights.

Over the course of this episode, I'll talk about the protogrungers, the early days and the rise of SubPop Records, grunge's breakthrough into the mainstream, the supergroup projects that formed, some of the non-Seattle grungers, the reasons grunge crashed out of the mainstream, whatever the hell "post-grunge" is supposed to be, and a bit about where grunge is today.

So strap on your Doc Martins, pull on your flannel overshirts and get ready to get dirty in the moshpit. Let's talk about grunge.

As always, if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so over at www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and if you're new to our show, you can find all the back episodes up at www.starlightsociety.com/

Finally and most importantly, thanks for tuning in, and I hope you'll go find a new convert for the show today. Keep spreading the word.

(Correction: In the show, I state that Kim Deal started The Breeders with her brother Kelly. I meant to say her twin sister Kelley. Brainfry, man. It happens.)

This week's show was a lot of fun, with me not giving a lot of preplanning to the show, remixing the set list right up through recording, putting things in, pulling things out, just finding an odd blend that tickled my fancy, but I think it should amuse and entertain loads of people, and if it's not for you, well, try again next week, I guess, but I love this week's episode.

It is, as the kids say, a banger.

It's got it all - domestic, international, current stuff, things from the Way Back Machine, rock, techno, jazz, hiphop, grunge, pop... we play stuff from loads of different countries (Turkey, UK, Indonesia, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Israel) as well, as always, and hopefully you'll find something new to love, as well as maybe be reminded to go listen to things you haven't fished out of your record collection in quite some time.

As always, if you want to contribute to the show, you can do so at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and you can follow me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/Devinoch and you can always find all our shows at http://www.starlightsociety.com/ and if you want to email me, I tell you the email address to reach me at the end of every show. Good lord, this social media thing results in a ton of hyperlinks. Maybe that's why they're so hyper.

Now, on with the tunes! Heeyah!

(Correction: In the show I mistakenly state that Temple Of The Dog was a tribute to the late singer of Poi Dog Pondering. It was a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late singer of Mother Love Bone. See Show #40 - Grunge to hear more about how many times I've made this mistake over the years.)

I'm feeling better again, after a week's cold/flu that was one of the worst I've ever endured, I think, and I'm back for another scene show. This week, we take a look at progressive rock, better known as Prog.

Prog's roots are mostly English, but there were American (and Canadian) prog rock bands too. Now, prog as a scene is too big for one scene show, so consider this Intro To Prog, and it focuses on '66-'77. At some point later, we'll revisit Prog in another scene show, and delve more into the time periods after that. Not next month, though.

As always, if you want to help the show, you can contribute over at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety/ and if you're new to the show, feel free to check out our entire back catalog of shows. Scene shows are clearly marked, and are powers of 4.

This week's show is full of Mellotrons and Roger Dean paintings, bands singing about mystic things and lofty ideals, time signatures that go off the rails and keep on going...

So I apologize for not talking too much in this particular episode, because I'm pretty sick, having spent all day Wednesday in bed, bundled up under three layers of blankets, in addition to a sweatshirt and sweatpants. I'm starting to feel a bit better, but I still don't feel "good" so I'm taking it easy, and that means the show is taking it easy too, so you get a potpourri show of odds and ends, a bunch of new songs from albums that just came out and the assorted old school favorite or two thrown in for seasoning.

Things'll make more sense next week, I'm sure, but this week, you can just attribute it all to my delirium fever haze and everything else will make sense later. As always, if you want to donate to the show, you can do that at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety and if you want to send someone to the show nice and easy, which you should be doing, as we always need fresh ears and new listeners, the page is http://www.starlightsociety.com/

Your patience, patronage and persuasion of pilgrimage is appreciated. Back to bed with me. I'm waxing alliteratively. Never a good sign.

"I'm 37?!"

Mar 18, 2016

It's been mostly rainy here in the Bay Area for the last few weeks (yesterday, when I recorded the show, naturally, it was bright and sunny, but I woke up to heavy clouds this morning) so I thought I'd do an entire show full of rain songs, of which there are a ton.

Rain has been a topic of fascination for musicians for a long time. It's a metaphor, it's imagery, it's a lot of things. Anyhow, enjoy two hours of songs about rain.

If you want to donate the show, as always, it's http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety/

This week's going to run a little long, but it's because my heart's too big for our usual 2 hour show. Fury In The Slaughterhouse have a new song out in the world, and will be celebrating their 30th anniversary at a concert in Hannover next year, which I am very much considering flying around the world for, even with money as tight as it is.

On this week's show, in addition to Greek hip hop, Argentinian blues rock, Japanese hiphop, French pop, Brazilian techno, Russian alternative and Japanese post-rock (plus our usual heady concoction of music dating back to the 1960s), we talk about musicians losing their hearing and what it means to love something so much you have trouble talking.

It's a bit emotional of a show for me, but I hope you'll understand and indulge me. I tell a fun story about how much technology has changed our love for music, but only in the good way.

As always, if you're interested in supporting the show (or my trying to get to see my favorite band in the world live again), you can help out at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety/ and we thank you, but you're also welcome to just subscribe to the show (via iTunes or whatever podcast subscription device you happen to be using on your phone or computer) and I hope you love this show just even half as much as I love making it.

As Big Chris says in "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" - "It's been emotional."

Hey folks - this week we're all over the place with stuff from Italy, Portugal, Japan, Germany, China, Iceland and more. We play stuff that's psy-trance, stuff that's experimental jazz, classic rock, cutup sound collages and whatever else I happened to be feeling at the time of the show.  Strap in for your weekly 2 hour ride.

Again, for those of you who are interested in helping to defray the costs of the show, we have a Patreon set up now, where you can chip in a few bucks every month. And for anyone curious, you can now go back and actually set the setlist for show one in the post for that podcast. Because, reasons.

The bit of Stone Roses news I rumored was going around when I was recording this podcast? Looks like it's bupkis. Oh well. A fella can continue to dream.

Your hero of the day is Val Kilmer. Let's rock.

This week's show is a scene show about the evolution of rockabilly into psychobilly and how psychobilly turned into a whole bunch of things, including gothabilly, voodoobilly, hellbilly and more. As with all scene shows, I play some foundation songs and then walk you up the timeline while letting you hear the evolution, as well as all the ingredients in the pot. We also dabble in what offshoots are slightly off to the sides, such as southern rock and alternative country, in our longest and most tune-packed scene show ever, clocking in just under 3 hours long. If you've ever been curious about the history of that double bass, horror show influenced blend of rock and roll known as psychobilly, this episode should give you plenty of places to start your own exploration.

For those of you who want to help out the show, you're more than welcome to - I've set up a Patreon for those of you who want to pitch a little in to ease the costs of the show. Every little bit helps. You can find it at http://www.patreon.com/StarlightSociety

Oh, and for the curious, I think the mixed in audio samples (most, but not all, of which are of my own choosing/blend) will probably remain a thing in the shows moving forward. The show's my own thing, which means I want to keep myself as entertained making it as hopefully it is for you listening to it, so I'll make sure they don't overwhelm the show, but I suspect you'd better learn to love them, 'cause they're not going anywhere.

This week's show is a little longer. They'll all be a little longer moving forward. Does anyone read these messages? Have my captors stopped paying attention to the notes? If so, send help, maybe in a file in a cake or something, and I can escape these bonds. For everyone else, this should be a fun show, full of music from a bunch of different countries and includes things like prog-metal, Turkish post-hardcore, Japanese ska, classic funk, Russian hip-hop, Portuguese groove rock, German classic rock, Indian prog-rock, Israeli trip-hop/pop-rock, fratboy metal-meets-hip-hop and even more.

Strap in, folks. You're in for a ride.

Remember the show I did with all long songs? You know how easy that setlist was to type up? Clearly, I needed to punish myself for being so lazy, so welcome to the incredibly short, short songs show, in which every track clocks in under 3 minutes, and I get to type in the set list from hell. I also tell a story in how one of my best friends growing up, his little brother would go on to become a big rock guitarist named Denver Dalley. Have fun!

As I've said for a while, this show is one grand experiment for me, so we're going to try shifting days - the show's are recorded on Thursday and will go up on Friday's now, so they're more current and up-to-date. That means expect no new show on Monday, because the new show is today, and next Friday.

This week's show is a banger, a loud clang-a-rang of music that is best intended for a raucous Friday night, and I tell some stories about more of where the idea of the show came from.

Play it loud, play it proud, tell all your friends.

Been curious about all the of the various musical subgenres out there? Well, this particular episode doesn't cover them all, but it sure covers a lot of them. Don't know your Britpop from your acid rock, or your prog rock from your cowpunk? Heard the term 'Psychobilly' before and wondered what the hell that sounded like? This'll do you. From this show, we'll be taking requests as to what the next scene show we should be doing is. Enjoy!

Also, I have the subgenre the track is after the band name in the setlist, for your convenience.

A little more than a week ago, one of the most prolific and important people in music passed away, David Bowie. For most of last week, I don't think I went a day without someone asking me "Where do you START in listening to David Bowie?"

Well, this show should provide you a good overview of the highlights of David Bowie's career. I can't cover everything, but I will do my best to give you a high-level view of the various phases of Bowie's career, and expose you to some of his best works. Everything other than my voice and my intro theme on this show was either written, co-written or performed by David Bowie.

I used cover versions in a number of instances, so you could hear the multitude of people who have covered this man's fantastic tunes of the years. I talk about the things he did for other people, like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Mott the Hoople and more.

He went through so many identities and wrote songs for so many people. This isn't meant to cover all of the best of Bowie - I didn't have the time for that - but it should give you an idea of the biggest touchstones in the man's 50 year career. I hope you'll enjoy the episode, and I hope it'll encourage you to explore a bunch more of the magic that was David Bowie. We miss you, Ziggy...

Finally, my voice is back to functional and it's time for another scene show, this time to look into the shoegaze movement, a guitar-centric movement that sprung up in England in the late 1980s. We'll talk about the roots of the movement, the big players and where it went over the years. Strap in for some edumacation, you can get your musical learning on.

For the December scene show every year, I'm going to do a overview of all the concerts I saw over the past year, talk a little bit about the artists and the shows (and sometimes the venues) and then play some of their stuff for you. This means you'll occasionally get blocks of comedy mixed in with your music, and the genre hopping will be even more all over the place than usual, as the show is put together in chronological order of when I saw people. Should be fun!
