Touring the world one pair of headphones at a time...

Nov 11, 2016

So if don't like the shows where I talk a bunch, skip this one. If you don't like hearing someone talk politics, skip this one. If you don't like poetry, skip this one. If you don't like protest songs, skip this one.

If you're frightened, depressed, angry, confused or just generally uncomfortable with the US right now, listen to this show over and over and over again until you wear out the internet. I swear a lot. I read a bit of my poetry. I rant a ton.

I know I'm a straight white guy, and that means a lot of people look at me and see the enemy right now. I understand that, and you have every right to. There is a lot of hate and racism and misogyny out there today.

But I will fight for women, for people of color, for people in any shade of queerness, for immigrants, for people of any religion. We're free together, or we're all enslaved together. If that means the government wants to come and arrest my ass, so be it. But I will not be intimidated. I will not be scared. I will protect you to my last breath, and past it if I can.

Just keep this in mind - don't let them make you run, make you hide, make you be afraid. Be cautious, be wary, but do not be afraid.

We'll fight and we'll win. Be strong. I am with you.

Even with our emo show (#80, available now!) being massive, I still had a little bit of space left over for the month, so I decided to put out a Halloween mini show for you guys (although it's not really THAT mini) full of frightfully good tunes, all on theme! Enjoy!

I know, I know, it feels like the emo scene show has taken forever, but whatever, it's done when it's done, and it's done now, so you can walk through that weird step-child from post-punk, post-hardcore and pop-punk and see what all the fuss is about.

This is one of those genres I love to bits, so it's a massive show, full of all sorts of great stuff. It runs long, is full of a bunch of bands you'll probably love and if not, well, okay, I guess they can't all be winners.

There's too much music for me to dwell on some of the stuff associated with emo - the fashion, the reports of self-harm (and whether that's a reflection of the music or the feelings expressed in it), the rise of "screamo" (and how that's mostly really just post-hardcore) and whether or not emo is a descendant of goth rock (you could make the case either way).

Sometimes I'm amazed I haven't played someone, because apparently all the music I've mixed together over the years all blends together into one giant blur of trying to introduce people to awesome new music, so I start this show off with a story about how I'm clearly losing my memory.

And I found a third opening act this year I liked enough to buy something from! Cats and dogs, living together... MASS HYSTERIA! (For reference, the first one was The Jaguar Club (Show #45) and the second was Gallows Bound (Show #76).)

So I watched the last presidential debate on Wednesday (I hope I mean of just this election, but god knows, it might be the last one we ever hold...) and I threw out the entire playlist I'd been building for this show and started from scratch, but I think it's a fun show nonetheless. This particular episode will be a lot more fun if you don't look at the set list ahead of time, but it's still here for you. And yet, from all this depression and frustration, I've learned something. We're as mad as hell, and we're not going to take this anymore.

Editor's Note: I apparently refer to this show as Show 77 multiple times in the episode, when it's clearly 78. I clearly need oversight, or am a bad hombre.

Today's show's all over the place, as per the usual, but you'll get all sorts of fun stuff to listen to, and hear me talk a bit about jam bands, Russian hip-hop, jazz and how awesome Adam Nutter is as a guitarist (as well as asking where the hell he is...)

Enjoy!

So this should be a scene show, but if I had done one, it would've been too short to cover the emo scene properly, and since the rules are mine, I can change them as I see fit. Instead, it's another good mixtape of all sorts of songs and genres, and should still provide some fun weekend listening. Also, you should be watching all of "Luke Cage" on Netflix right now. Seriously.

This week, I expose you (ah-HA!) to a bunch of people who should've been huge hits, and never really were, much to my sadness. You'll get some neo-funk, some classic R&B, some blues rock, some visual kei, some electro-industrial-goth and a bunch more.

As always, at the end of the show, I tell you how to reach out and say hi. Drop me an email and shoot me a hello on Twitter. To my new listeners in Mexico, drop me a line - tell me about a band from Mexico or two that I should be checking out. Same for you folks in Belgium! I see you over there. We love listener discovery. Just point me in a direction and I'll go digging.

And if you want to donate, you can do that here: To donate!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to listen to the following podcast, and to tell as many of your friends about it as you possibly can. As always, your team selection is being left up to you, but I would recommend getting as many people as possible to listen to the podcast, lest we decide to stop issuing missions. Should you or any of your podcast force be caught or killed, I'm totally going to disavow ever knowing your ass, and you will be hung out to dry. This podcast will self destruct in... oh, let's call it an hour or so. Plenty of time for you to listen to it all.

Good luck, Jim.

Not a ton to say about this one, other than it's chock full of stuff I love, and dab of international spice. Plus, new music from a band whose last album came out 17 years ago. Not quite up to the 22 year highwater waiting mark set by My Bloody Valentine, but, y'know, much longer than I would have liked... Still, it's coming, and sometimes that's all you can ask for...

Okay, so this month's scene show is about post hardcore, a genre that is commonly confused with both post-punk and emo. To be fair, there are a number of bands that have made a bunch of music that is both emo and post-hardcore, and we'll tackle that. Over the nearly 3 hours of this scene show, I'll try and give you an overview of the genre, and let you hear many of the major players.

It's worth noting that I'm not a huge fan of some of this stuff, and I'm also sick, so I have less to say this episode than normally, but there's plenty of music to hear, and if you don't hear anything that tickles your fancy, we'll be back early next week with a standard show, assuming my voice comes back.

I tell a number of hilarious stories on this show, including one how I cite a source, only to later realize it's ME I'm citing, just from 20 years ago. This show also runs long, because I'm skipping the Monday/Tuesday show next week. (Space concerns.) But we'll be back next Friday with another scene show for ya. Until then, enjoy.

The artificial intelligence inside my computer seems to be giving me trouble lately. They're fighting with me throughout this show. So if it's a little weird, I can offer no sympathy for the robot devil.

But it's still fun, nonetheless.

The challenge? Put together an imaginary soundtrack. This one's for a revenge thriller. Introduce our protagonist. Show the good things in their life. Take those good things away from them. Tell them who's responsible. Unleash.

There's a healthy dollop of blues rock, a bit of techno, some mid section melancholy, a high tempo action scene and some closing credits music. Music from Iceland, Japan, France, Germany, lots of stuff from England...

Have fun, kids. I'll see you on Friday.
