Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to listen to the following podcast, and to tell as many of your friends about it as you possibly can. As always, your team selection is being left up to you, but I would recommend getting as many people as possible to listen to the podcast, lest we decide to stop issuing missions. Should you or any of your podcast force be caught or killed, I'm totally going to disavow ever knowing your ass, and you will be hung out to dry. This podcast will self destruct in... oh, let's call it an hour or so. Plenty of time for you to listen to it all.

Good luck, Jim.

Not a ton to say about this one, other than it's chock full of stuff I love, and dab of international spice. Plus, new music from a band whose last album came out 17 years ago. Not quite up to the 22 year highwater waiting mark set by My Bloody Valentine, but, y'know, much longer than I would have liked... Still, it's coming, and sometimes that's all you can ask for...

Okay, so this month's scene show is about post hardcore, a genre that is commonly confused with both post-punk and emo. To be fair, there are a number of bands that have made a bunch of music that is both emo and post-hardcore, and we'll tackle that. Over the nearly 3 hours of this scene show, I'll try and give you an overview of the genre, and let you hear many of the major players.

It's worth noting that I'm not a huge fan of some of this stuff, and I'm also sick, so I have less to say this episode than normally, but there's plenty of music to hear, and if you don't hear anything that tickles your fancy, we'll be back early next week with a standard show, assuming my voice comes back.

I tell a number of hilarious stories on this show, including one how I cite a source, only to later realize it's ME I'm citing, just from 20 years ago. This show also runs long, because I'm skipping the Monday/Tuesday show next week. (Space concerns.) But we'll be back next Friday with another scene show for ya. Until then, enjoy.

The challenge? Put together an imaginary soundtrack. This one's for a revenge thriller. Introduce our protagonist. Show the good things in their life. Take those good things away from them. Tell them who's responsible. Unleash.

There's a healthy dollop of blues rock, a bit of techno, some mid section melancholy, a high tempo action scene and some closing credits music. Music from Iceland, Japan, France, Germany, lots of stuff from England...

Have fun, kids. I'll see you on Friday.

Okay, okay. OKAY. I'm gonna do it. I did it. It's done. I'm settling the argument about what is and is not "post punk" and "post punk revival" in the episode of the show in which I swear the most (you've been warned - SWEARING AHEAD), because I'm sick and tired of lazy music critics being unable to discern between post-punk and garage rock (or even basic punk rock).

By the end of this show, you should be able to recognize key elements of the post-punk scene, and understand where it came from, where it vanished into (hint: goth-rock/new-wave) and what made it come back.

It's a big show, but you only get one scene show a month, so I should make them count...

Lots of countries, lots of fun tunes, lots of strange combinations, but it should all be things you enjoy, or at least enjoy being exposed to. There's Canadian psychobilly, Australian political rock, Midwestern funk, French acid-house, Moroccan dub, Taiwanese rubber soul, and blasts from the past that ought to tickle and delight.

Go find a new person today to get to subscribe to the podcast. Even if you need to grab someone random on the street, or go print out a poster with the site's address and tape it to a telephone pole or a streetlight. More listeners means more shows! As President Obama said, "If a farmboy from Tatooine can save the galaxy, you can too."

Next week, big big show to celebrate one year of me doing this nonsense. Be here or be a [REDACTED].

As always, I recommend not reading the setlist until you've heard the show. You'll only spoil your surprises. Also, go out and make new people listen to the show. We need more fresh blood. And to my new listener in Bulgaria who seems to be listening to most of the shows, welcome! No idea how you found us, but go get some friends to listen!

  • "Last Song" - The Smashing Pumpkins
Jun 17, 2016

In the early 1990s, England had a series of reactions to the grunge and shoegaze movements, the biggest of which was a desire to return to the classic rock stylings of the 60s and 70s. This spawned the movement known as BritPop, whose heyday ran from 1991 until 1997 or so.

Over the next three hours, I'll walk you through some of the key moments in BritPop, play you some of the biggest tunes, introduce you to a bunch of "also-rans" and talk about what ended up causing BritPop's decline (Spoiler: mostly BritPop itself).

It's a fun show, a "best of BritPop" if you will, full of lots of bright and bouncy songs, plus a whole lot of England.

Weird week. As I type this in, I'm sitting on a Ticketmaster page, camped, waiting to get tickets to Prophets of Rage, listening to the second Stone Roses single (which will be in next week's show), being sad that the singer/guitarist from Boom Boom Satellites is losing his battle with his brain tumor. I saw Caravan Palace a few days ago, and that was good. There's a song this week about "the best part of Ohio" for my Ohio peeps. There's a bit of Indonesian rock.

This week's show, like most shows, we'll cover all sorts of stuff. It's a few minutes long, but I wanted to spend a little bit of extra time on Boom Boom Satellites, so I did, and you can't stop me.

This week's your usual sized, fun-filled episode, stuffed to the gills with music from Japan, Turkey, Thailand, Finland, Germany and more. We go as far back as swing, and as cutting edge as trip-hop. We play music from The GothFather, from the king of Proto-Punk, and music that's somewhat educational.

It's a fun show. You should enjoy it. I know I did.

It's the end of the month, and in constantly proving that Cliff is bad with space estimates, I had a ton of time left over, so I provide to an XL sized show stuffed full of awesomeness and excitement, with loads of our favorites all crammed into an epic 3-hour episode.

This is also a week I recommend NOT looking at the set list until after the show is done, simply because it's full of a bunch of fun surprises.

You will get stuff from Argentina, Japan, Germany, Russia, Israel, Portugal, a big block of Scottish rock, and even more things that I'm too excited to type in right now. Rock, jazz, hip-hop, stuff from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and teens... Oh, and the new Stone Roses single!

Just listen to it. It's awesome.

This week, we deep dive into the world of post-rock, full of gorgeous instrumentals and soundscapes that build worlds out of songs without words. This is one of my favorite subgenres of music - I have an entire playlist full of this stuff for when I'm writing that I just set on shuffle, and it drifts me through all sorts of moods and mindscapes. A guy I bumped into at the Motion City Soundtrack show said I should do a scene show on post-rock, so here we are.

If you aren't familiar with post-rock, it's rock without lyrics. I think you'll dig it. I know that I have for almost 20 years now. There isn't a ton about the history or development of the genre, simply because it isn't a centralized movement with a discernible story arc, but there is such a plethora of amazing bands doing this stuff, I didn't repeat anyone in the show, just to give you as many different sounds as possible, and I still had post rock bands I left out.

You can keep digging if you want more, I'm sure, but now you know where to start...
