This month's scene show is all about grebo, a very specific substrata of music that was focused around 1988-1999 in the Midlands of the UK. There's a small number of bands in it, but some of them were quite prolific, and a number of them have returned after long absences, so it seemed like a good time to bust it out. It's a little short for a scene show, but should give you a good idea of the whole field, and inspire you to seek out some of these bands on your own.

This episode is not for kids. But it makes me laugh. Give it a listen. Tell other people to listen to it. And good LORD the show with me and Topher got a lot of downloads... I'm not sure if that's because it's long, or because people enjoyed hearing me and someone else bounce off one another...

Feb 7, 2017

Sort of back to our normal mishmash of styles and genres and bands and things, but hey, who can tell any more. It's a lot of music that keeps me moving and getting through the rough political snafus we keep getting. It seems like each and every day, something new gets fucked up. The show on the weekend is going to swear a lot, so be warned of that, but this should mostly just be music to ease the roughness of the days...

So, this is a strange one... I don't know how many of you are going to want to download and listen to this, but this show was recorded Wednesday with my oldest friend, Topher, who was in town, and features a lot of us talking about how we met, how we grew up, our time rooming together in college, the period in time where we faded from each others' lives and our eventual return and where it's found us.

Don't get me wrong. There's a bunch of music here, and I think the conversations are a fascinating look inside of my head from an outside perspective of someone who's known me the longest, but your mileage may vary. What with downloads being as low as they have been the last few weeks, I'm starting to think that I can do whatever I want and it won't affect the tiny number of listeners I have anyway.

The conversation volume levels for this episode are all over the place - sorry about that. I've never done a show with someone else before. The music selection leans very heavily into the late '90s (surprise) but I think the show is worth listening to, even if you may not. It's up to you. It's also a long show, just under 3 hours, with probably 45 minutes of that me and Topher talking. Up to you.

An episode mostly of protest music, to put you in the right mindset to be fighting daily, and to keep your spirits up, so you know people have your back. It's hardest to be the first person to stand, and it's just as hard to take your first stand, but it's important that everybody get out and protest right now, so we don't take this lying down.

There's classic rock, stuff from two of the countries that Trump hates (Syria/Mexico), some stuff from countries that are worried about us (UK/Germany/Japan) some stuff to get you angry, some stuff to help you ease off enough to get your second wind, and then a bit more to get you angry again. This is one of the times that I have to say that Roger Daltrey is wrong - the new boss is not the same as the old boss. Trump's gotta be removed from office as soon as possible, before that's no longer an option... He's currently making Nixon look like a 3rd grade class president with delusions of grandeur. Keep at it, folks.

Yeah, I took a little time off. Head wasn't in the right space, body was failing a bit, bunch of other things went sideways, but I didn't quit on you. Don't quit on me. We're worth it, all of us. (And feel free to spread the show around - I know, I know, self-promotion is a shitty thing to have to do when we're in the middle of a revolution, but we all gotta do it anyway...)

Jan 20, 2017

It's a hard time right now. One of the most despicable people just became the President of the United States, and he's trying to take the country back to the 1800's. We aren't going to stand for it, but it's also important we stand together, and that we remember who and what we're fighting for. It's okay to stumble, it's okay to sit and take a breather, it's okay to lean on someone else for help now and again, but we aren't going to back down, and this show's all about togetherness and trying to stay positive in the face of adversity.

I know I said I wasn't going to do a Friday show, but I can change my mind, too, and I keep coming back to this Frank Turner lyric...

"So try and get better and don't ever accept less..."

Double long show again, because I wanted to do an extra long work out show of stuff I use to motivate myself into going to the horrible gym in an effort to try and get back into shape, a shape other than the one I'm currently in. I hate the gym. Everybody hates the gym, but fuck it, if you want to eat rich, you need to do the work to be able to afford it. And while I'm scaling back what and how I eat, I'm not giving up all the things I like. Fuck that.

Also, no show over the weekend. And still need ideas for the next scene show.

Jan 1, 2017

Well, this is it folks, the last mix of 2016. The year is finally drawing to a close, and while there were a ton of horrible things that happened, there were a few rays of personal sunshine that I'm going to hold onto dearly into 2017 and hope that I can make it through another go around of the sun.

If you're one of those people who enjoys when I make weird left turns in the show, and delights in being surprised, don't read the setlist until you've listened to this episode once...

Sorry about no show earlier in the week, but the Year End Concert Review had gotten lost in the holidays, so I wanted to let it have more time for people to listen to it. Hopefully this extra long show makes up for it, and hopefully you people are actually listening to these things. Some days I feel very much like the lone person standing on the edge of the world, shouting into the abyss.

But I hope we'll get through things together.

Dec 23, 2016

Here's everybody I saw live this year, and what I thought about the shows. I talk a bit about each show and sort of frame where I was in the year with it, and why some shows are more important than others. It's a good year end revue of why live music is important to me, who I'll see more than once, and what it takes for me to walk out of a concert I've paid for.

All of this, of course, means this show is more grab bag than normal, and that's saying something. You'll get prog victory metal, neo country, stand up comedy, electro swing and a whole lot more in a little more than two hours. It's all presented in chronological order, starting from last December and up through today, although the last show I saw was a bit back. What can I say, December's been busy.

I do this every December as the scene show, a reminder of how live music plays such an important part in my life. Take a trip down my memory lane, won't you?

Dec 20, 2016

Happy holidays from all of us here at Starlight Society Productions (which is to say, me and my producer/cat Maverick) and I wanted to bring you a show full of a lot of holiday music, but not exclusively holiday music. And I wanted to avoid that sort of stuff you get on the oldies station, or things your parents play to make the family die on saccharine overdose.

So enjoy this one from me to you. Consider it your aural stocking stuffer.

(Which is a nice way of me saying to shove it into your earholes and savor it.)

Good music, perhaps a bit more melancholy of Cliff than we need, but the holiday season always tends to darken my clouds a little bit. But there's still plenty of great music for you to enjoy.
