Time for a scene show, but this one's a little different. Instead of covering a period of time or a genre of music, this scene show is all about my favorite band in the world, Fury In The Slaughterhouse.

Now, the Furies broke up in 2008, but reunited in 2016 in honor of their 30th anniversary, recording some new songs, putting together a new Best of, and playing some shows in 2017.

I flew to Germany in 2008 to see the band live for the first time, on their farewell tour, and this year, a bunch of Fury fans donated money to ensure I could fly out to see some of the 2017 reunion shows as well.

I've been writing up my experiences, but I also wanted to do a podcast, not just about that experience, but also about the band themselves, to give people an overview of the band's history, play something from each of their albums, and then play something from each of the band members' side projects.

Listen to the show, get the new Best of, then start buying as much Fury stuff as you can. Only one album, "The Hearing And The Sense Of Balance," is available on US iTunes right now, but it's a start.

There are 6 people in the band: Kai Wingenfelder (lead vocals), Thorsten Wingenfelder (guitar), Christof Stein-Scheider (lead guitar), Christian Decker (bass),  Rainer Schumann (drums) and Gero Drnek (keyboard, guitar, mandolin, a bunch of other things). They currently have a 7th member with them for the tour, Martin Huch (guitar, pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar, mandolin). Also, there were two other people who were in the band before, Kai Liekenbröcker (keyboard) who left in 1989, and Hannes Schäfer (bass), who left the band in 1996 to become a doctor.

All of the band members are great, and they were nothing but kind to me. Anything I can do to pay the band back in terms of raising awareness is only a small portion of the thanks I owe them.

Here's the setlist, and afterwards, some pictures from the trip. The rest of my writeups should be up in a few days, over at http://devinoch.blogspot.com/ and you can read the longer stuff there.

Mar 26, 2017

So this episode in particular is dedicated to Claudia, my host over at Hotel Ernst, who put me up when I was in Germany to see the three Fury In The Slaughterhouse shows a few weeks back.

Claudia and I talked music quite a bit and she had a lot of German bands that she suggested I look into. Most of those bands are featured here, as well as a few English-speaking bands who are similar in style, hopefully to introduce her to some other things as well.

I'm much of the way through writing the story of my trip now, and should have all of that in time for Show 120 on Tuesday, which will feature a lot of me talking and a bunch of music from the Furies (and related Fury projects).

Enjoy!

As this podcast drops, I should be getting on an airplane in Frankfurt, heading back to the States, ecstatic and bouncing with energy, after three consecutive Fury In The Slaughterhouse shows. I'm sure I'll have stories to tell, but this show was recorded on 3/2, so we're not there yet.

Hope you all missed me while I was away and said wonderfully fawning, adoring things to me on Twitter or via email. See you all soon!

This month's scene show is all about grebo, a very specific substrata of music that was focused around 1988-1999 in the Midlands of the UK. There's a small number of bands in it, but some of them were quite prolific, and a number of them have returned after long absences, so it seemed like a good time to bust it out. It's a little short for a scene show, but should give you a good idea of the whole field, and inspire you to seek out some of these bands on your own.

This episode is not for kids. But it makes me laugh. Give it a listen. Tell other people to listen to it. And good LORD the show with me and Topher got a lot of downloads... I'm not sure if that's because it's long, or because people enjoyed hearing me and someone else bounce off one another...

Feb 7, 2017

Sort of back to our normal mishmash of styles and genres and bands and things, but hey, who can tell any more. It's a lot of music that keeps me moving and getting through the rough political snafus we keep getting. It seems like each and every day, something new gets fucked up. The show on the weekend is going to swear a lot, so be warned of that, but this should mostly just be music to ease the roughness of the days...

So, this is a strange one... I don't know how many of you are going to want to download and listen to this, but this show was recorded Wednesday with my oldest friend, Topher, who was in town, and features a lot of us talking about how we met, how we grew up, our time rooming together in college, the period in time where we faded from each others' lives and our eventual return and where it's found us.

Don't get me wrong. There's a bunch of music here, and I think the conversations are a fascinating look inside of my head from an outside perspective of someone who's known me the longest, but your mileage may vary. What with downloads being as low as they have been the last few weeks, I'm starting to think that I can do whatever I want and it won't affect the tiny number of listeners I have anyway.

The conversation volume levels for this episode are all over the place - sorry about that. I've never done a show with someone else before. The music selection leans very heavily into the late '90s (surprise) but I think the show is worth listening to, even if you may not. It's up to you. It's also a long show, just under 3 hours, with probably 45 minutes of that me and Topher talking. Up to you.

An episode mostly of protest music, to put you in the right mindset to be fighting daily, and to keep your spirits up, so you know people have your back. It's hardest to be the first person to stand, and it's just as hard to take your first stand, but it's important that everybody get out and protest right now, so we don't take this lying down.

There's classic rock, stuff from two of the countries that Trump hates (Syria/Mexico), some stuff from countries that are worried about us (UK/Germany/Japan) some stuff to get you angry, some stuff to help you ease off enough to get your second wind, and then a bit more to get you angry again. This is one of the times that I have to say that Roger Daltrey is wrong - the new boss is not the same as the old boss. Trump's gotta be removed from office as soon as possible, before that's no longer an option... He's currently making Nixon look like a 3rd grade class president with delusions of grandeur. Keep at it, folks.

Yeah, I took a little time off. Head wasn't in the right space, body was failing a bit, bunch of other things went sideways, but I didn't quit on you. Don't quit on me. We're worth it, all of us. (And feel free to spread the show around - I know, I know, self-promotion is a shitty thing to have to do when we're in the middle of a revolution, but we all gotta do it anyway...)
