Touring the world one pair of headphones at a time...

Aug 19, 2017

My voice is a little shot this episode, so I don't talk as much, but there's plenty of good music in this show, including what members of The Verve have been up to, a mini-song block about trains, some stuff I like that may surprise you and some stuff that probably won't. Enjoy, or don't. Your mileage may vary.

Two years. One hundred and fifty shows. That's a whole lot of music to sift through, so for those of you who might be new, or maybe don't have time to listen to the show every week, now you can get what I think the best stuff I played in the last year is, in the 3 1/2 hour scene show that covers all of my favorite tracks from last July to this July. Enjoy all the wonderful music. New episode will go up on Friday.

So this is a megalithic episode, and it goes on forever, but it should give you tons of amazing music to listen to, and cover nearly every band of the spectrum. Electro, rock, metal, jazz, hiphop in three languages, post-rock, prog piano, a comparison between two bands both named Slaves, a tribute the drummer John Lever, so jam music, some classic rock... look, there's something for everyone. Considering how long this episode runs, there would have to be, right?

So strap in and enjoy a 4XL episode of the show.

So we're returning to the one-a-week, two-hour-show format starting immediately. I talk a little bit about why in the episode, but basically, it's just easier for me to manage, and I didn't see much of an uptick one way or another in doing two shows a week. Consider yourself notified.

Lots of international flavor this week, but also lots of classics, and a small rant from me on why I think "nü-metal" got unfairly slagged as we mourn the passing of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

We get down with our random selves, but hopefully you'll find some band you're not familiar with to love here, and you can go out and support them.

As always, tell your friends and family and coworkers about the show. Downloads have been getting disappointingly low as of late...

This is probably one of my favorite mixes in quite a while. I have been listening to this playlist for about a week nonstop, and it also contains a spoiler about what our next scene show will be (show 144, next week). But there's stuff for everyone on this, and the random dial is set to high. You'll have a blast.

Also, find a friend, make them subscribe to the show. It's free, it's awesome, and it's going to introduce them to their new favorite bands. I promise. Would I lie to you?

I know, I know, it's been a while since there's been a show, but none of you lot seem to have noticed, or at the very least commented on it, so I'll do what I want, y'know?

The truth of the matter is that I ran out of storage space last month after the scene show, so I simply waited until the new month started for another show, and I didn't feel like recording yesterday, but today I did, so here's your new episode, you pack of nonexistent vultures.

Take a listen to 135 before you get here, as it sets up the early foundations about pure industrial, and over the 2+ hours of 136, I'm going to focus on industrial rock, electro-industrial and, occasionally, industrial metal, although the line between industrial rock and industrial metal blurs so much it's hard to distinguish them, often.

This is a heavy episode, but should provide an excellent soundtrack for whatever angry, aggressive actions you might be getting up to. Also, EXPLICIT LYRICS WARNING - there's some songs with heavy swearing. So, y'know, headphones on, people...

Okay, a few things of warning for you about this show.

  1. This is a mini-scene show.
  2. The theme is industrial, which means it can be hard to listen to for a lot of people.
  3. The more accessible stuff will come in the next episode.
  4. That's also a scene show, focusing on the split between
    1. Electro-industrial
    2. Industrial rock
    3. Industrial metal
  5. If you want to listen to this one and just fast forward through a bunch of the music, that's cool, but it'll help frame your understanding for show 136.

On Wednesday night, Chris Cornell took his own life, possibly under the influence of medication. One of the last titans of the grunge era, Cornell was best known for fronting Soundgarden, but had a long and varied career, so I want to take this Friday show to do an overview of his career, and celebrate some of the amazing music he put forth into the world. We miss you already, man.

[EXPLICIT SHOW INCOMING]

So I had this idea that I wanted to do an episode of standup comedy, some of my favorite comedians, and see where that took me. As it turns out, it lead me to a 90 minute episode that still doesn't have all the people I wanted to include, so if people dig this and ask for another one, I'll do another one at some point.

If stand up comedy isn't your thing, try a different episode. But for those of you who love comedy and are trying to get through these dark times, this should give you a broad spectrum of lots of great comedians, and if you find somebody you like, seek out their material. I highly recommend it.

So I always say if you want me to so a scene show on a topic of your choosing, send it my way. I had a request to do a scene show on hip-hop, which is simply too broad a topic to cover in a couple of hours, so I chose something within that request and focused on that. This is a broad overview of the rivalry between East Coast and West Coast rappers in the early 90s, and the inevitable, violent conclusion of it, when the two largest figured in the feud, Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., were gunned down within 6 months of each other. Both murders remain unsolved.

Also, this show contained a TON of profanity, so if that puts you off, skip this episode and I'll see you next week.
