Touring the world one pair of headphones at a time...

Nov 9, 2017

So when this show drops, I'm in Seattle, waiting for my flight out to Germany to go see Fury In The Slaughterhouse play live again, for three acoustic shows. It'll be a whirlwind trip, so I cooked this show up in advance. Tom Petty was one of the biggest songwriters of his generation, comparable to Reed, Springsteen and Dylan. He passed away on Monday, and I wanted to celebrate his career by doing an RIP show to cover the life and times he saw over his 40+ years as a musician. As always, go out and buy some albums, but if you don't think you're familiar with Tom Petty, let me show you just how mistaken you are. These songs are the fabric of generations, and we will not see his like again any time soon.

Sep 28, 2017

So last week I was feeling both physically and mentally suckage, as Front 242 might say. I had a million things to do, I felt like I was hitting failure walls in a bunch of stuff, the country is continuing to be a disaster area (both figuratively and literally) and I just couldn't seem to give a shit about much of anything. So I decided to skip the week.

This week, I've seen Public Service Broadcasting play at the Swedish American Hall and Ride play at The Fillmore, and tonight I'm going to see Andrew W.K. at The Independent. One of my artistic projects has mildly resurrected itself from the dead, and we'll see if that continues. That all helped to sort of recharge the batteries a bit and get me going again.

In the spirit of just getting up and getting on with it, I give you the biggest episode I've ever done. I've got a shitload of filespace for the month, having skipped two weeks essentially, and just decided to do a huge huge show. No scene show - maybe next week or the week after, depending on time.

(Also, if you're the person who was flying the helicopter over my home for about an hour during the recording of this episode... you'll never take me alive...)

Hopefully you enjoy the episode, and it's got something for just about everyone in it. It's got rock, it's got electronica, it's got metal, it's got jazz, it's... well, it's ultra big, and you can listen to it for as long as you need to, or in as many sessions as you want. Just listen, and if you enjoy the show, give me a simple shoutout via Twitter or email or whatever. That kind of thing means way more than you realize, especially in the autumn/winter.

You also probably shouldn't look at the setlist until you've listened to it. It'll be way more fun that way.

So now, the megashow.

So this was a fun episode to put together. Every song is tied to the song before and after it, sometimes in obvious ways, sometimes in less obvious ways. I do explain all the connections - many are links between names of bands and/or names of songs - but you may find it fun just to listen to this one and not look at the set list until afterwards.

You may not be amused by it, but I was, and really, that's all that matters...

My voice is a little shot this episode, so I don't talk as much, but there's plenty of good music in this show, including what members of The Verve have been up to, a mini-song block about trains, some stuff I like that may surprise you and some stuff that probably won't. Enjoy, or don't. Your mileage may vary.

Enjoy all the wonderful music. New episode will go up on Friday.

So this is a megalithic episode, and it goes on forever, but it should give you tons of amazing music to listen to, and cover nearly every band of the spectrum. Electro, rock, metal, jazz, hiphop in three languages, post-rock, prog piano, a comparison between two bands both named Slaves, a tribute the drummer John Lever, so jam music, some classic rock... look, there's something for everyone. Considering how long this episode runs, there would have to be, right?

So strap in and enjoy a 4XL episode of the show.

So we're returning to the one-a-week, two-hour-show format starting immediately. I talk a little bit about why in the episode, but basically, it's just easier for me to manage, and I didn't see much of an uptick one way or another in doing two shows a week. Consider yourself notified.

Lots of international flavor this week, but also lots of classics, and a small rant from me on why I think "nü-metal" got unfairly slagged as we mourn the passing of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

As always, tell your friends and family and coworkers about the show. Downloads have been getting disappointingly low as of late...

Lots of ground to cover, so hopefully this will give you a bunch to listen to, and you'll find a ton of bands you want to seek out on your own from here.

This is probably one of my favorite mixes in quite a while. I have been listening to this playlist for about a week nonstop, and it also contains a spoiler about what our next scene show will be (show 144, next week). But there's stuff for everyone on this, and the random dial is set to high. You'll have a blast.

Also, find a friend, make them subscribe to the show. It's free, it's awesome, and it's going to introduce them to their new favorite bands. I promise. Would I lie to you?
